KOKS, your partner for roughening surfaces with high pressure

High-pressure roughening is an effective method to process surfaces in a controlled way and bring them into the right condition for follow‑up steps. It is often used as a pre‑treatment to improve the adhesion of new layers (such as coating, paint, or concrete repair), but also to make a surface less slippery and increase grip. With KOKS high‑pressure solutions and the right accessories, you can roughen a wide range of substrates such as concrete, (natural) stone and grating in a safe and reproducible way.

What is high-pressure roughening?

High-pressure roughening is the controlled roughening of a surface using water at high pressure. The top layer is deliberately processed to create more structure. This is used as a pre‑treatment to improve adhesion of new layers such as coating, paint or repair mortar, or to make a surface less smooth and increase grip. The degree of roughening can be adjusted and depends on pressure, water volume (flow rate), spray angle, stand‑off distance and accessories.

Why roughen surfaces with high-pressure?

In many situations, high‑pressure roughening is an attractive alternative to traditional mechanical methods because the result is well controlled and repeatable. Where milling, grinding or bush‑hammering can affect the substrate relatively roughly and unevenly, high‑pressure roughening can be set very specifically to the desired surface structure. In addition, you work with water instead of grit or intensive mechanical processing, which can limit dust formation and keep the work area cleaner. It also allows very precise work in zones or passes, without unnecessarily removing material outside the work area. Finally, high‑pressure roughening is suitable for a wide range of substrates because accessories and settings can be tailored to the material, accessibility and the required end result.

Where is high-pressure roughening applied?

High‑pressure roughening is used on various substrates such as concrete, metal, (natural) stone and grating. Depending on the goal, surface preparation or improving grip, the method is applied to both large areas and specific zones where extra structure or slip resistance is needed.

  • Industry and maintenance: steel structures, installations, tank surfaces, machine frames and work floors
  • Work areas and walkways: platforms, grating, stairs, walkways and floor zones where extra grip is required
  • Civil engineering and infrastructure: bridge decks, viaducts, parking garages, concrete floors and tunnel walls
  • Renovation and construction: concrete walls and floors as preparation for repair, finishing or new layers, including façade and panel elements
  • Maritime and offshore: deck sections, platforms and walkways as preparation for preservation work or grip improvement
  • Logistics and industrial environments: loading bays, platforms, warehouse floors and zones with increased slip risk, such as wet or contaminated areas

High-pressure units up to 3,000 bar for roughening

For high‑pressure roughening, KOKS supplies Hammelmann Aquajet trailers up to 3,000 bar. These units are built for project deployment where you want a uniform roughening pattern and need to adjust settings quickly to the substrate and desired result.

Key features of the Aquajet trailers include:

  • ES3 control for monitoring, operation and nozzle calculation, with multiple language options
  • Optional advanced sound attenuation, with low noise levels according to the documentation
  • Modern diesel configuration with Stage 4 and AdBlue
  • Road‑going trailer design with tandem chassis and overrun brake, suitable for use at different locations
  • Easy set‑up thanks to accessible connections and maintenance access via large panels

KOKS is happy to advise you on the right Aquajet version and configuration for your roughening job.

Accessories for roughening: nozzles, rotating heads and floor cleaners

The roughening result is largely determined by the right tools. With Hammelmann accessories, the surface structure and intensity can be controlled very precisely so the roughening pattern matches the substrate and the goal. For manual and targeted roughening, KOKS supplies Hammelmann high‑pressure guns that can be configured with suitable spray heads and nozzles. This is ideal for precision work in detail zones where maximum control is required.

For larger areas, floor cleaners up to 3,000 bar are more suitable. They allow you to work in consistent passes, resulting in a more uniform roughening pattern and higher productivity, for example on floors and plates.

A key part of the Hammelmann range is the MASTERJET rotor jets. These can be fitted with 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 nozzles. Each configuration produces a different spray pattern and therefore a different roughening result. This allows the processing to be matched very precisely to the required structure, for example to improve adhesion or increase grip.

Assembling the right setup for tank and container cleaning

Every tank or container cleaning job requires a carefully considered combination of unit, accessories and settings. Our specialists actively work with you and, if desired, determine the optimal configuration based on tank type and volume, material, type of contamination and the desired result.

This also includes attention to working safely, especially when working in or near confined spaces. As a distributor of TST Sweden, KOKS can provide you with high-quality PPE specially developed for high-pressure work. This means you don't get a standard solution, but an efficient, safe and reproducible approach that fits your installation, planning and quality goals.
